We advise participants of the water temperature in the run up to each event. Basically, if it is over 15C and under 23C it is wetsuit optional. Regardless, we would recommend the use of a wetsuit if you are new to open water swimming and/ or a weaker swimmer. Both shorties and full-length wetsuits are acceptable but should not exceed 5mm in thickness. Please note that a triathlon-suit is not an alternative to a wetsuit.

All of our adult and junior (13-15 year olds) cycle routes* are on closed roads and as such, we recommend that you hire or buy a road/ racing bike (this includes lightweight hybrid types as we know that not everyone gets on with drop handlebars!) for your race. This said, we have many a fine participant who use their mountain bike (heavy) and we have even seen a bike with a kids seat still affixed to the back of it!
The children’s (8-12 year olds) cycle route always takes place within the Castle Estate boundary and as such off the public road and free of traffic. We recommend mountain bikes although some use a cyclo cross bike (effectively a racer with off-road tyres). The courses encompasses a complete mix of terrain but not too technical (e.g. no bunny hopping logs or super steep descents).
Cycle helmets are compulsory for all.
All running routes are off road and depending on conditions under foot can require a trail type running shoe. If you only have normal running shoes you will also be fine but just won’t get the sort of traction the super fast guys and girls get as they hurtle around the course.
*The Junior Cycle route at Hever Castle in September is off road and includes 2 laps around the estate on a variety of surfaces including grass, track, tarmac and gravel.
