The Bastion - Full iron distance

3.8km swim / 180km bike / 42km run

At the Festival of Endurance, Hever Castle only in July

The famous full Iron distance will return to Hever Castle this July.

The iconic endurance challenge will kick off with a 3.8km lake swim before a 180km bike takes competitors around the Kent countryside. A 42km marathon run completes what will be arguably Britain’s toughest and most rewarding long-distance event.

This race distance is currently on offer at Hever Castle only.

The Gauntlet - Middle distance

1.9km swim / 90km bike / 21km run

At all venues

The Gauntlet, our half iron distance race, successfully launched in 2013, is now in its 8th year of refinement.
The tough challenge starts with a 1.9km swim in the castle lake, swiftly followed by a demanding 90K cycle in the local countryside and finished off with a 21km run around the estate grounds.  Free hot meal, massage, finisher t-shirt and medal will be awarded to all those successfully completing the distance.  Not for the feint-hearted these races have become a national treasure and the Festival of Endurance race at Hever awarded the BTF English Championships in 2021.
This race distance is offered at all 6 of our live events.

Olympic Triathlon

1.5km swim / 40km bike / 10km run

At all venues

Our proven Castle Triathlon Series Olympic races mirror the distance with a 1.5km lake swim, followed by a 40km bike through the stunning local countryside surrounding the castles (4/5 are in designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The 10km run takes place in the grounds, leading to an unforgettable finish line experience alongside the castle.

This race distance is open to both individual and relay entries.

Sprint Plus Triathlon

800m swim / 40km bike / 8km run

At all venues

The Sprint Plus acts as a beautiful bridge between the Sprint and Olympic distances.

The 800m swim is perfect for anyone new to the open water experience but is aiming for Olympic, with the extended 40km bike and 8km run likely to suit anyone stronger in the bike and run disciplines.

This race distance is open to both individual and relay entries.

Sprint Triathlon

750m swim / 20km bike / 5km run

At all venues

Exactly half the standard or olympic, the Sprint is one of the most popular race distances. A perfect opportunity to put your speed to the test but also great for people stepping up from the Super Sprint.

Kicking off with a swift 750m lake swim before a 20km bike in the rolling countryside in and around the castle grounds.  Finished off with a 5km largely off-road run around the picturesque castle grounds provides a thrilling and memorable finale to the race.

Super Sprint Triathlon

400m swim / 20km bike / 4km run

At all venues

Tipping our hat to the under stable fears people have with swimming in open water this race distance provides a stepping stone to the  Sprint and Sprint Plus and is one of the most popular distances at all events.

This super sprint  kick off with a swift 400m lake swim before a 20km bike in the rolling countryside in and around the castle grounds.  The 4km largely off-road run around the picturesque castle grounds will provide a thrilling and memorable finale to the race.

This race distance is open to both individual and relay entries.

Starter Triathlon

200m swim / 13km* bike / 2km run

At all venues

Starting things off for the adult races at Castle Series is the accessible, hugely fun and rewarding super-sprint distance.

The event, for 15years plus, kicks off with a swift 200m lake swim before a 15km bike on quiet roads in the rolling countryside in and around the castle estate.  Whether you’re a newbie to tri or an experienced old-hand looking for pace, the 2km off-road run around the stunning castle grounds will provide a thrilling and memorable finale to the race.

This race distance is open to both individual and relay entries.

Mixed team relay (4 person race)

250m swim / 5km bike / 1.5km run x 4*

This new triathlon race format, due to be part to the 2021 Olympics is rare in the European triathlon market with little opportunity for triathletes to enjoy the exciting and fast moving pace. However, since Mixed Team relays joined the Castle Triathlon Series in 2017 it has gathered momentum and now welcomes a yearly pilgrimage of club championships!

A team of four participants race in a tag team with each member completing a short triathlon, within the Castle grounds and closed roads, before handing over to the next team member. This fast and exciting event offers the opportunity to race with club members, friends and family on a fun and competitive level.

Two mixed team relay formats:

  • Mixed Team Relay – Four adult team members consisting of two males and two female participants.
  • ‘Family’ Mixed Team Relay – Four members including at least one adult and no specific gender split required. Minimum age is 13 ( as of 31 December of competing year).

The racing take place at the Saturday afternoon at four of our five castles; Lough Cutra Castle – Ireland, Cholmondeley Castle -Cheshire, Castle Howard  – Yorkshire and Chateau de Chantilly – France.

Youth (15-16 yrs) Triathlon

500m swim / 8km bike / 2.4km run *

Our Youth event begins with a 500m lake swim before a challenging and exciting 8km cycle and concluding with a 2.4km trail run around the castle grounds.

Our Junior TS3 event begins with a 400m lake swim before a challenging but hugely fun 6km cycle and concluding with a 2.4km trail run around the castle grounds.

Junior TS2 (11-12 yrs) Triathlon

300m swim / 4km bike / 1.6km run *

Our Junior TS2 event offers a 300m open-water swim in a calm castle lake, a 4km bike before a 1.6km trail run finale.

Our Junior TS1 event offers a 200m open-water swim in a calm castle lake, a 4km bike followed by a lovely 1.3km train run. One parent is allowed in transition with their children to offer some assistance.

Junior TS Starter (8yrs) Triathlon

100m swim / 1km bike / 600m run

Only in Ireland and France

The shortest event in our celebrated children’s races takes place within the safety of the Castle grounds, beginning with the exciting 100m open-water latke swim, followed by a 1km trail bike ride, and finishing off in a 600m dash to the finish line. One parent is allowed in transition with their children to offer some assistance.

Duathlon

At all venues

  • Duathlon Standard – 10km run / 40km bike / 5km run
  • Duathlon Sprint – 5km run / 20km bike / 2.5km run

Duathlon is the fastest growing multisport discipline in the UK and we are hosting the ITU Qualifier for the Standard Distance World Championships 2022 at Hever Castle in September.  For those of you, new to the sport who want a challenge but don’t fancy taking the plunge into one of our Castle lakes, one of these memorable duathlon races is for you. Begin your race with one of our famous run courses, followed by a Sprint or Standard distance cycle leg in stunning countryside, and finish with another shorter run in the Castle grounds to bring you across The Castle Series finish line.

Distances at Hever Castle Festival of Endurance in July

  • Duathlon Long – 21.5km run / 90km bike / 10.5km run
  • Duathlon Middle – 10.5km run / 45km bike / 4km run 

Competitors embark on the 10k/21.5km run course, which follows largely off road tracks and bridle paths between Hever Castle, through the historic local village of Chiddingstone, followed by the fully marshalled and signed bike course with supported feed stations. This circular cycle route will take competitors out of Hever Castle, up through the High Weald of Kent before passing through and over the Ashdown Forest and into the village of Maresfield. After a quick tour of the village competitors retrace their steps to the top of the forest before returning to Hever via the historic and quintessentially English villages of Groombridge, Fordcombe and Penshurst. Finish with another beautiful but mercifully shorter run, bringing you across The Castle Series famous finish line banquet!

Aquabike

At all venues

  • Aquabike Standard – 1500m swim / 40km bike
  • Aquabike Sprint – 750m swim / 20km bike

For those of you wishing to test yourselves against some of the best, we are hosting the Irish National Standard Distance Aquabike Championship in 2021 at Lough Cutra Castle.

If swimming and cycling are your strongest disciplines but you can’t or won’t run, then our aquabike distances are for you. Whether you’re taking on a Sprint or Standard distance Aquabike at any of our weekend festivals, you’ll begin your swim in the unique setting of a castle lake, before cycling through some of the UK, France and Ireland’s most stunning rural landscapes.

  • 3.8k swim: 120k cycle: 4k optional run (Laps 2:2:1)
  • 1.9k swim: 60k cycle: 4k optional run (Laps 1:1:1)

For those seriously into their distance these two race options will treat you to your limits.  After the unique swim you’ll head out on the fully marshalled and signed bike course with supported feed stations. This circular cycle route will take competitors out of Hever Castle, up through the High Weald of Kent before passing through and over the Ashdown Forest and into the village of Maresfield.  After a quick tour of the village competitors retrace their steps to the top of the forest before returning to Hever via the historic and quintessentially English villages of Groombridge, Fordcombe and Penshurst.  Finishers have the option of completing with a gentle 4K run that circumnavigates the lake and stunning grounds of the Hever estate.

Aquathlon

At all venues

  • Aquathlon Standard – 1500m swim / 10km run
  • Aquathlon Sprint – 750m swim / 5km run

Swim / run races are gaining hugely in popular support and our race variants, based on existing courses, will offer a serious test of your race fitness.  Following a 750m or 1500m swim in one of our stunning castle lakes, head straight onto a 5km or 10km run through castle estates and beautiful woodland, celebrating your swim-run achievements as you cross The Castle Series finish line and join your fellow athletes at our multisport festival.

These longer swim/ run races present a serious test of endurance to all participants and you will be racing shoulder to shoulder with some of the best multisport athletes in the country at this event.  After the unique swim (1 or 2 loops), competitors will then embark on the 10k/21km run course, which follows largely off road tracks and bridle paths between Hever Castle, through the historic local village of Chiddingstone, before re-entering the Hever grounds to cross a finish line to remember!

Through beautiful countryside and castle grounds, past the castle (at some events two), lake and quaint villages with spectators and locals cheering you on all the way, these  marathon, half marathon or 10K  stunning on and off road courses take place at  the most iconic venues in the UK, Ireland and France.

Forget the city marathon, and fill your lungs with country air and stunning scenery before you conquer your marathon by a Castle drawbridge. This Marathon and Half marathon course promises the most stunning on and off road course in the UK, a truly motivational and beautiful route that will distract you from the challenge itself. The two or four laps take in two castles, two lakes, quaint Kentish villages with oust houses and castle grounds with spectators and locals cheering you on all the way!

The swim only event provides the choice of three different distances: taking place at all five venues. The swims, described  as the ‘best open water swims ever completed’ boasts unique and stunning swim routes in all the castle lakes.

The swim course leaves from the Italianate loggia taking competitors down the length of the main lake and heading into the scenic river section.This tributary of the River Eden wraps around 16 Acre Island allowing spectators to watch and cheer competitors on from only a few meters away.

The Castle Cycles Sportives

  • 90k Cycle Sportive

The inaugural Festival of Endurance cycle sportive is a wonderful amalgam of a number of recognised local cycling route classics.  The circuits scales a massive ascent.of 2,428m and 1,187m, respectively.  Wearing your Geo Tracks GPS tracking device,  your friends and family can follow your progress online as well as joining you at pre-planned stopping points on the course.  You will pass well stocked feed stations, have a signed route to follow and pass through some of the most stunning scenery in the South East.  The circuit, whilst taking in some of the existing triathlon routing, sees you climbing up and over the Ashdown Forest at its western end on your way south before descending into and crossing over the River Ouse.

The 180k takes a foray into the South Downs National Park, via the world famous opera house at Glyndebourne, sees you all the way to the South Coast at Eastbourne.  The hills are not over there as your return north passes through the High Weald and as far East as the historic town of Battle. The  return to Hever Castle for both circuits takes you via the eastern end of the forest and some of the most quintessentially English villages that you could hope to find.  An absolute corker of a route fit for champions but with cut-off times to suit those that just fancy a great day out in the countryside!

Trade your time for a free race place! We offer a Volunteer Scheme, whereby a free race is given in return for a day’s marshalling at any one of the Castle Triathlon Series events. (terms apply)
